Tenerife Parks, Gardens and Tenerife Arboretums

Known for its exceptional national parks and volcanic, lunar landscape, Tenerife also offers many other important areas of green, including landscaped gardens and public parklands. Tenerife's Teide National Park (Parque Nacional de las Canadas del Teide) features spectacular scenery and is home to the tallest mountain in Tenerife.
For formally landscaped gardens and exotic planting, the Botanical Gardens in the Puerto de la Cruz area of Tenerife contain many important collections and mature plants. Also worth a visit, Tenerife's Garcia Sanabria Park, La Granja Park and Parque del Drago are all known for their landscaped gardens and exotic planting. Here are Tenerife's main parks and gardens.

One of the island's premier parks, the Teide National Park attracts more than four million visitors each year and gained national park status in 1954. Located in the heart of Tenerife, the park contains around 20 walking trails and tracks, and currently 14 plants which are not found in any other place on the planet. One of the park's main attractions is Mount Teide, Tenerife's tallest mountain which measures almost 3,720 feet / 12,202 metres and offers spectacular panoramic views of the area. The vast park covers around 46,950 acres / 19,000 hectares and features a wealth of indigenous flora and fauna, regular cable car rides and an observatory. Teide National Park is also famous for its numerous flat depressions, which are known locally as 'canadas' and were created by landslides almost 200,000 years ago.

The Tenerife Botanical Gardens stand in the island's Puerto de la Cruz and have become a major attraction in their own right. Founded more than 200 years ago, the Botanical Gardens feature a number of important plant collections, including rare and endangered indigenous species. Containing many landscaped areas connected by pathways and trails, the gardens are home to a popular herb house, ponds, large trees, colourful planting and a library with many horticultural books and plant-related documents.

Tenerife Parks and Gardens: La Granja Park - La Granja, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain
La Granja Park was created in the 1970s and covers around 16 acres / 6 hectares. Full of tropical and exotic plants, including large palm groves, dragon trees and colourful flowers, La Granja Park also features a noteworthy sculpture, which has been dedicated to famous naturalist and media celebrity Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente, who died in 1980.

Tenerife Parks and Gardens: Sitio Litre Gardens - Camino Sitio Litre, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Created at the end of the 18th century, the historic Sitio Litre Gardens are the oldest on the island. A private garden for many years, the Sitio Litre Gardens are now open to members of the public and contain a particularly impressive collection of orchids. Other botanical highlights here include large dragon trees, palm trees, a coffee shop and temporary exhibitions.

The Parque del Drago stands in the Icod de los Vinos area of Tenerife and is known throughout the island for being home to an ancient umbrella-shaped Dragon Tree, which is believed to be around 1,000 years old. This enormous tree is almost 20 metres / 66 feet in height and is worth seeing in the flesh, although good views are available for free from the Plaza San Marcos. The Parque del Drago also features many other exotic plants and is close to San Marcos Church.

Tenerife Parks and Gardens: Garcia Sanabria Park - Calle Dr. José Naveiras and Rambla del General Franco, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Covering an area of around 17 acres / 6.5 hectares, Garcia Sanabria Park can be found between Calle Méndez Núnez and Calle Numancia. Founded in the 1920s, the parks contains many important and impressive collections of plants, including botanical specimens, mature trees, a monument to famous local Garcia Sanabria - the park's namesake, a seasonal flora clock, walking trails and seating areas.
